Awarded by Unesco, Abdon Atangana, who specialises in applied mathematics, dreams of an Africa which dominates the sciences.

 

In June 2023, the 37-year-old mathematician was awarded the first Unesco-AI Fozan International Prize for the Promotion of Young Scientists in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In 2019, Abdon Atangana was ranked by Stanford University as the second best mathematician in the world, among the top 2% of scientists in the world.

He is the first mathematician to win the TWAS Mohammad A. Hamdan Prize, awarded by the World Academy of Sciences for outstanding mathematical work by a scientist working and living in Africa or the Arab region.

Abdon Atangana, who studied partly in Cameroon, was the world’s most cited mathematician in 2017 for his scientific work.
