Amnesty International and 16 Cameroonian organisations are calling on the Government to investigate the crimes committed in the North West and South West regions.

The security crisis in the North West and South West regions, which has lasted since 2016, has seen several crimes committed.  Until now, they remain unpunished. It is in this line that various human rights organisations are calling for an investigation.

The 17 organisations just issued a joint declaration. The statement was drawn up on the occasion of the Universal Periodic Review of Cameroon, which began on Tuesday 14th November before the Human Rights Council of the United Nations. In the view of these non-governmental organisations, the international community’s response to the conflict has been insufficient in terms of conflict resolution and punishment for the murderous violence. As these crimes go unpunished and others continue to be committed, the group of organisations is making demands of the Cameroonian government.

These include the immediate opening of an investigation into the crimes and human rights violations committed by the armed groups and the regular forces. They also call for the protection of human rights defenders, journalists and other categories of people who have been threatened with death for having produced documents on the crisis.
