Classes were given to Central African refugees who have settled in the East Region.
They are far from where they used to live, but not all is lost for them. These are people who decided to escape the devastating security crisis rocking the Central African Republic. After almost a decade as refugees in Cameroon, particularly in the East Region, they have been the beneficiaries of language training this year. These literacy courses are the result of the “Food and Nutrition Cash Transfer Operation in Garoua-Boulai, Mandjou, Bétaré-Oya, Ngoura and Bertoua in the East Region”. PLAN Cameroun, a non-governmental organisation, is implementing the programme.
The aim of the programme is to enable the beneficiaries to become more independent by learning to speak French, to use numbers and to be able to use the telephone easily. In this way, they will be able to carry out their own transactions at points of sale and avoid fraud.
The participants in this wave were predominantly female and were selected in the pilot sites of Mobe, Garoua-Boulai and Woumbou. In the end, 139 participants were able to complete the course, including 84 in Gado-Badzere.
