Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index shows that Cameroon has registered a new position.
According to Transparency International, Cameroon’s global ranking has improved regarding. In 2022 for instance, Cameroon was ranked 142 out of 180 countries worldwide and 34 in Africa, with a score of 26/100. On a scale of 0 (very corrupt) to 100 (very clean), Cameroon scored 27/100, placing the country 34 in Africa and 140 in the world.
With this score, Cameroon remains, as in 2022, the second least corrupt country in the central Africa, behind Gabon. Gabon also retains its position as the best student in the Cemac zone in this respect, with a score of 28/100, placing it 32 in Africa and 136 in the world.
Transparency International points out that despite this progress in some countries, the overall situation in the region remains mediocre, with the regional average unchanged and 90% of sub-Saharan African countries scoring below 50.
According to the NGO, the 23 countries that have improved have implemented various reforms to tackle corruption in recent years. Côte d’Ivoire, for example, has amended its legislation to require senior civil servants to declare their assets. The country also launched a digital platform for whistleblowers in 2023, encouraging citizens to report acts of corruption that have a significant economic impact.
