They had been excluded for lack of fingerprints. But an announcement by the Director of the institution during the second edition of the permanent national consultation platform between ELECAM and the other stakeholders within the electoral process has clarified the situation.
Good news for the Cameroonian electorate! The 120,000 citizens who were excluded from the national electoral roll for lack of fingerprints after registering during the registration campaign that ended on 31 August have been reinstated. ELECAM Director, Erik Essousse, communicated this information to the other stakeholders in the electoral process during the dialogue platform that has been bringing them together since November 26. The number of registered voters for 2024 has therefore risen from 755,085 to 875,085.
The national electoral roll currently contains 8,236,960 voters. This reinstatement of citizens on the electoral roll follows numerous denunciations, including that of the national president of the MRC. On several occasions, Maurice Kamto denounced the purge, which targeted the areas where his party won the most votes in the 2018 presidential election. The opponent saw it as a way for Elecam to help reduce the number of potential voters.
