The Bishop of the Diocese of Buea, His Lordship Michael Bibi, has facilitated the release of Twenty-Nine (29) inmates from the Buea Central Prison.
This initiative, which comes as relieve for the beneficiaries of this gesture, was spearheaded by the Diocesan Justice and Peace Office following a period of sustained legal advocacy, meticulous case reviews, and close collaboration with judicial and prison authorities.
The relaease of the inmates comes in line with the significant move of the Buea Diocese toward restorative justice and the protection of human dignity.
The action underscores the Catholic Church’s commitment to defending fundamental human rights and fostering social reform within the community.
Addressing the former inmates as they received their release certificates, Bishop Michael Bibi emphasized that their release represents a “second chance” accompanied by a profound moral responsibility. He urged them to act as ambassadors of good conduct and to become positive influences within their families and neighborhoods. The Bishop reminded the group that lasting freedom is built on a foundation of discipline, personal integrity, and a steadfast respect for the law.
Supporting this call to action, Miss Joyce Mbong, Director of the Justice and Peace Office, encouraged the beneficiaries to pursue honest livelihoods and make the most of this new opportunity. She highlighted that successful social reintegration is a shared responsibility, requiring a balance of community guidance and personal accountability. Through this intervention, the Diocese of Buea continues to fulfill its mission of promoting peace and restoring hope to those on the margins of society.
