New deaths linked to cholera have been recorded in Cameroon, mainly in the Central region which has been facing “an upsurge of cases” for “four weeks”, announced the Minister of Public Health , Manaouda Malachie.

The epidemiological situation shows 88 notified cases and 5 deaths, for a case fatality rate of 5.68%,” . The minister of Public Health said that cases have been notified and confirmed in the health districts of Obala, Djoungolo, Cité Verte, Biyem-Assi, Mfou and Nkolndongo.

He assured that measures have been taken to contain the epidemic. “With the help of its development partners, the Ministry of Public Health has already activated the incident management system for the cholera epidemic at the central level and has been reactivated in the Central region which was in a lull. The teams of the Regional Delegation of Public Health in the Centre are working hard to contain this epidemic, but also to avoid its spread to other regions,” said Manaouda Malachie.

This is an opportunity for him to call on the population to observe the rules of hygiene, which are measures to prevent cholera. These include washing hands with clean running water and soap before and after using the latrines, washing food with drinking water before consumption, making water safe to drink and cooking food thoroughly.
An acute diarrhoeal infection caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with bacteria, cholera has already claimed more than 300 lives since its resurgence in October 2021 in Cameroon.
