While the elections were originally scheduled for November 10, one of the candidates accuses the ministry of attempting to interfere in the electoral process.
It all started on December 23, 2022. According to our colleagues from Stopblablacam, the outgoing president of the Cameroonian boxing federation, Bertrand Mendouga, also a candidate for his succession, seized the IBA for suspicion of attempted interference by the supervisory ministry in the electoral process.
“The latter is particularly opposed to the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) set up at the end of the general assembly of the federation last November and validated by the Minsep in its role of compliance control. At the initiative of the outgoing officers, another GA was convened resulting in the establishment of a new IEC. Consequence: there are two IECs each responsible for overseeing the implementation of electoral procedures within Fecaboxe,” reports the news site.
Meanwhile, IBA decided to appoint an independent observer for these elections. In a letter sent on January 13 to the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, the Secretary General of the IBA, George Yerolimpos, explains that this step aims to guarantee the transparency of the elections.
But at the ministry, we reject any idea of interference. The president of the operational and monitoring technical commission within the monitoring committee of the process of renewal of the governing bodies of national sports federations, Léon Sango explains,“The federations organize their elections, the supervisor that is the Ministry, follows them while remaining in its regulatory role. By setting up the Monitoring Committee, the supervisory authority prescribed uprightness, impartiality, neutrality, and fairness. That is what we are trying to do. We ensure the interests of all parties.”
