Faced with the lack of financial resources allocated to refuse collection in Yaoundé, the mayor , Luc Messi Atangana, is considering the introduction of a tax to which the producers of refuse will be subjected to .

According to Jean-Pierre Ymele, Managing Director of the company Hysacam , citing a World Bank study, the city ; Yaoundé needs a minimum of FCFA15 billion each year to ensure the collection of gabbage . But the Cameroon government only allocates a budget of just over FCFA 4 billion yearly for this activity. This represents 85% of the total budget, the remaining 15% of which is provided by the Yaoundé City Council .

What’s more, the share made available by the government is often released late, leading to repeated strikes by employees of Hysacam, the company that until recently held the monopoly on refuse collection in the country. This monopoly was broken a few months ago in Yaoundé, with the recruitment of Thychlof Sarl.
The city’s mayor is keen to recruit new operators, given the ever-increasing volume of rubbish produced in the capital as a result of population growth and the expansion of the city. “Hysacam itself admits that it is overwhelmed by the volume of waste,” confides the city’s mayor.
