Cameroon produced 16,000 tonnes of milk in 2021, according to figures from the National Statistics Institute.
This production was 12% down on 2020. It has to be said that milk production in Cameroon was less vigorous than in 2020, a year marked by the Coronavirus pandemic, which paralysed economic activity in every country in the world.
What’s more, in order to boost milk production, which is estimated to be in deficit by 120,000 tonnes each year, between 2020 and 2023 Cameroon acquired 495 dairy cows of the Montbéliarde breed, which “has the advantage of adapting more easily to harsh climatic conditions”. “Abundant water and grass guarantee a production of 20 litres of milk per day per cow. Technological advances in milking allow milk production to be intensified“, explains the Livestock Development Project (Prodel), funded by the World Bank.
