The National Communication Council – NCC – of Cameroon held its 49th ordinary session on March 5, 2026, under the leadership of its President, Joseph Chebonkeng Kalabubse.

Operating under the regulatory framework of Decree No. 2012/038, the Council convened to deliberate on twelve critical cases involving allegations of misinformation, defamation, and professional malpractice within the media landscape.

The session resulted in a wave of disciplinary actions, ranging from formal warnings to heavy suspensions, aimed at enforcing ethical standards and social responsibility among media practitioners. The information is contained in a press release made public on March 5, 2026

A significant portion of the rulings addressed the protection of state institutions and the integrity of official data. The Council suspended Journalist Adolarc Lamissia of Le Jour for a month following a report deemed misleading regarding a National Gendarmerie operation. Similarly, Jules Romuald Nkonlak, Editor-in-Chief of Le Jour, received a one-month suspension for a “gross violation” of statistical interpretation concerning the official results of the October 2025 presidential election.

These decisions underscore the NCC’s commitment to preventing the dissemination of information that could discredit public authorities or destabilize national trust in official processes.

The session also focused heavily on the protection of individual reputations against unfounded accusations of financial malpractice. High-ranking officials, including the Minister of Public Works and the Director-General of the Investment Promotion Agency, successfully petitioned the Council against several print organs. Consequently, publishers of L’Emissaire, LE REPORTER Hebdo, and Le Point Bihebdo faced suspensions of up to two months.

The Council noted that these outlets failed in their fundamental duties of investigating and cross-checking facts before publishing allegations of embezzlement and tribalism.

In the broadcast sector, prominent stations like Equinoxe TV, Vision 4, and Jambo FM were scrutinized for a lack of editorial balance and poor moderation. While Equinoxe TV received a warning letter for a report involving a communication from Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary, Vision 4 presenter Bony Menyene Philipe was suspended for one month. The Council ruled that his failure to moderate a debate resulted in offensive remarks damaging to the Prime Minister’s reputation.

These sanctions highlight the regulator’s expectation for broadcasters to maintain neutrality and prevent their platforms from becoming vehicles for hate speech or character assassination.

Conversely, the NCC demonstrated its role as an impartial referee by dismissing cases where journalists demonstrated rigorous investigative standards. Mr. Louis Roger Manga, General Manager of MAETUR, saw his complaints against L’EQUATION and Génération LIBRE dismissed after the publishers provided conclusive documentation to back their reports on public contracts. These rulings serve as a reminder that the Council does not exist solely to punish, but also to protect the press when they adhere to professional requirements of truth-seeking and evidence-based reporting.

The most severe penalty of the session was reserved for L’Ouragan Indépendant and its publisher, Emmanuel Yimga, who were both suspended for six months. This heavy sanction is as a result of their blatant refusal to comply with official summons regarding a complaint filed by the Vice President of the South Regional Council. By treating such non-compliance as an obstruction of its regulatory mission, the NCC has sent a clear message to the media community: the era of ignoring regulatory oversight is over, and cooperation with the Council is mandatory for the continued practice of journalism in Cameroon.
