The South Regional Agency of the National Employment Fund – NEF has held a pivotal sector meeting in Ebolowa aimed at restoring the fashion and tailoring industry to its former glory.

The meeting that took place this April 8, 2026 witnessed detailed presentations that focused on the economic impact of sewing and the professionalization of the trade. Stakeholders explored how a well-structured garment sector could become a powerhouse for the local economy.

Alain Tieck, head of the NEF in Ebolowa, emphasized that the gathering served as a vital platform for actors to coordinate efforts and exchange strategies to promote this essential branch of the national economy.

Participants at this meeting unanimously acknowledged that the tailoring sector holds the potential to create thousands of jobs and improve the livelihoods of young people across the South region.

However, the discussion also highlighted significant hurdles, most notably the unfair competition from imported second-hand clothing and a persistent lack of modern production infrastructure.

To counter these challenges, the workshop stressed the urgency of developing innovative local strategies that not only inspire new vocations among the youth but also celebrate Cameroon’s rich and diverse cultural heritage through high-end fashion.

In response to these obstacles, a series of robust measures were adopted in Ebolowa to reposition the industry on local, national, and international stages. Recommendations focused on increasing the productive capacity of local tailors and providing structured support across short-, medium-, and long-term horizons to ensure business viability.

There is a growing consensus that for the fashion industry to thrive, it must transition from informal, small-scale operations to a more organized corporate structure capable of meeting modern market demands.

The event also unveiled an operational plan to elevate Cameroonian fashion to international standards, citing the new textile factory in Buea as a promising indicator of industrial growth. Central to this transformation is a commitment to continuous training and capacity building through future colloquiums and design workshops.

These constructive exchanges in Ebolowa are expected to act as a definitive trigger for the professionalization of the sector, ensuring that “Made in Cameroon” fashion becomes synonymous with quality and economic prosperity.
