Ethiopia has earned $39.8 million from electric power export to neighbours Djibouti and Sudan during its current first half fiscal year which began on July 8, 2022.The Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) Communications Director Megos Mekonnen said $21.4 million of the revenue was secured from power export to Djibouti while the balance was earned from western neighbor Sudan.

The director said the revenue from the electric power export to Sudan amounting to $18.3 million saw a 25 percent decrease from the target.

The director noted that EEP has already begun exporting power to southern neighbour Kenya.

Ethiopia is set to export at least 200 megawatt of electricity to Kenya when the 500kv electricity lines installation project, connecting the two countries becomes fully operational.

Jointly funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank, the project was operational last year. 

A delay from the Kenyan side has held Ethiopia back from exporting a planned 200mw of electricity, earning the east African  country $8 million  a month.

This had created concerns among Ethiopia`s authorities who fear that the country may not meet its ambition of generating $1 billion in annual electricity exports to neighbouring countries beginning in 2023.
