March 17, 2026, marked a historic turning point in Cameroon’s legislative history as both the Senate and the National Assembly elected new leadership, signaling a significant renewal within the state’s highest institutions.

In the upper house, His Majesty Aboubakary Abdoulaye, the Lamido of Rey-Bouba, was elected to succeed Marcel Niat Njifenji, who had led the Senate since its inception in 2013. Simultaneously, the National Assembly saw the end of the Right Honourable Cavayé Yéguié Djibril’s 34-year tenure with the election of Honourable Théodore Datouo. Both leaders hail from the ruling CPDM party, and their dual ascension represents a strategic recalibration of power within the country’s parliamentary landscape.

At 64 years old, His Majesty Aboubakary Abdoulaye brings a unique blend of administrative expertise and traditional authority to the Senate presidency. A graduate of the prestigious National School of Administration and Magistracy – ENAM, his career is defined by high-level public service, including his appointment as Secretary of State for Agriculture at the age of 36 and strategic roles within the Civil Cabinet of the Presidency.

As a seasoned political strategist for the North Region and a former First Vice President of the Senate, he seamlessly bridges the gap between modern governance and his spiritual role as the traditional ruler of Rey-Bouba.

The National Assembly’s new Speaker, 66-year-old Honourable Théodore Datouo, is a prominent business magnate from Bangou in the West Region known for his entrepreneurial acumen and pragmatic leadership.

Having served as a lone candidate and securing an overwhelming majority of the ballots, his election is viewed as a move toward modernizing the Lower House while maintaining political stability.

His rise to the “perchoir” is interpreted by observers as a testament to his long-standing influence within the legislative mechanics of the country and his ability to command respect across diverse political interests.

Beyond the top leadership changes, the parliamentary reshuffle also highlighted a growing commitment to gender inclusivity with the election of Mrs. Begala Mikel Née Epse Akono as the Senior and First Vice President of the Senate.

This landmark appointment serves as a powerful testament to the evolving role of women in Cameroon’s decision-making bodies, proving that female leaders are increasingly being entrusted with high-level responsibilities. Together, these appointments reflect a broader effort by the CPDM to balance tradition, regional representation, and gender parity at the helm of the nation’s legislative power.
