The competition is due to take place on 24 February in Buea, in the South West Region.
Administrative authorities of the Southwest Region recently met to discuss the holding of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope contest. The race is said to be held on February 24 against the background of the ongoing security crisis in the region. On top of this, there is the memory of last year’s incident, with the bomb attack that left 16 people injured and one dead.
Speaking to the press, one resident said: ” I am worried about the bombings, but I want the race to go ahead. It is an important event for our community. It brings us together and shows our strength. We hope for a peaceful race that will unite our community in Buea “.
But the authorities are trying to reassure a worried public. After consultation, they assured that the event will take place “without a hitch”, highlighting the security measures that have been put in place.
This year’s race will see 275 senior men, 65 senior women, 105 junior men, 30 junior women, 90 veteran men and 37 veteran women compete to win it all. France and Kenya have the largest number of foreign competitors.
