The population of the south region can now boast of having access to high quality care for Dialysis Patients thanks to the inauguration of the Hemodialysis Center of the Sangmélima Referral Hospital this January 6, 2026.
The edifice that sets to provide a vital resource for those suffering from chronic kidney disease in the Dja-and-Lobo division, its surrounding areas, and beyond was inaugurated by the Minister of Public Health, Dr Manaouda Malachie.

The ceremony was attended by official representatives of the people of Sangmélima, the City Mayor who emphasized that the opening of the center is a powerful act by the Head of States to begin the his seven-year term, placed under the signs of greatness and hope—specifically the hope for health for all, without discrimination.

As kidney disease remains a major public health challenge (affecting an estimated 10% to 14% of adults), Dr. Malachie Manaouda stressed that the inauguration of this facility is neither a coincidence nor a mere privilege. It aligns with the logic of democratizing access to quality healthcare and the implementation of Universal Health Coverage, which has been in place in Cameroon since 2023. With this opening, local and visiting patients will only pay 15,000 FCFA for their annual dialysis sessions and will no longer have to travel hundreds of kilometers to receive specialized care.

A Robust Infrastructure
The Sangmélima Hemodialysis Center initially features:
- Six beds equipped with six dialysis machines (including two for a VIP suite).
- A water treatment room with three tanks and filtration systems to ensure high-quality water for procedures.
- A dedicated warehouse for kits and consumables.
- A 150 KVA generator to guarantee 24/7 power.
- A water tower to ensure a permanent supply.

Future Expectations
As the people expressed their gratitude for the center and also used the opportunity to present several requests for improved care. These include:
- Strengthening human resources.
- Rehabilitating the local District Hospital.
- Completing the renovation of the Presidential Pavilion at the Sangmélima Referral Hospital.
- Upgrading the facility from a Category 2 hospital to a General Hospital.
The Minister of Health reassured the public that measures are already being taken and are currently being executed to address these needs.
