Chief Ayamba Jacques Ita, the Mayor of Eyumojock, has been released. He was successfully liberated yesterday January 8, 2026, following a targeted military operation carried out by the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR). After being held for two days by some elements of the separatist fighters, the municipal leader was immediately placed under the protection of the national defense forces. He is currently reported to be out of harm and is receiving appropriate care.

His abduction took place on Tuesday, January 6, as the Mayor was traveling along the Mbakem–Taboh road axis. In a move that highlights the increasing boldness of armed groups in the region, the assailants intercepted the Mayor while he was driving his personal vehicle. This incident has drawn significant attention to the security challenges within the Manyu Division, a strategically vital area in the South West Region located along the border with Nigeria.

The news of Jacques Ita’s release has brought a significant sense of relief and a “breath of hope” to the local community. For several months, residents in this part of the country have lived under a cloud of insecurity, fear and the constant threat of separatist activity. This successful rescue serves as a rare moment of positivity for a population navigating a tense and difficult security climate.
