To uphold public sanity for the promotion of clean cities in Cameroon, the Minister of Territorial Administration, Atanga Nji Paul, at the behest of the Head of State, has instructed administrative authorities in the Centre Region to effectively supervise waste disposal.
The instruction was made this January 21, 2025, at the MINAT’s conference hall in the presence of the Governor of the Centre Region, Naseri Paul Bea; the Senior Divisional Officer – SDO of Mfoundi, Emmanuel Mariel Djikdent; the Mayor of Yaounde City Council, Luc Messi Atangana; the 7 DOs for the Centre Region; municipal authorities; representatives from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development- MINDHU and officials of waste collection companies like Hysacam and Thychlof.
The objective of the concertation was to make sure administrative authorities are at the heart of the fight against urban disorder through the putting in place of clean, clear and fit strategies based on collaboration between the SDO’s, DO’s and garbage collection companies.
The administrative authorities were instructed to supplement the work of municipal councilors through weekly street inspections to ensure proper garbage disposal. Divisional Officers under the Senior Divisional Officers, coordinated by the Governor, would henceforth control waste collection, making sure that areas mapped out for waste deposits are clearly organised, dismantle waste collection sites that appear multiple yet unnecessary and discipline the population in the exercise.
While giving the Ministry a deadline of 72 hours, Atanga Atanga Nji announced the provision of a contingent of work tools to the seven municipal councils of the Center region comprising 700 wheelbarrows, 700 trowels, 700 brooms and 700 rakes. The distribution will take place on Friday, January 23, as from 11am with each of the councils receiving 100 packs each. The minister emphasised that waste management is an individual and collective responsibility. Sensitization campaigns will be carried out to educate the public on proper waste practices.
