Elections Cameroon, ELECAM has introduced a platform to identify and make amendments to issues hindering the electoral process in Cameroon.
Launched in Yaounde, August 8, 2023, the Chairperson of the Electoral Board of ELECAM, Dr Enow Abrams Egbe said it was a response to the plight of stakeholders.
“As you all know, a few months ago, we carried out a series of bilateral consultations with you, in view of collectively identifying obstacles to our electoral process,” he told stakeholders at the launch.
At the said sitting, a series of decisions were reached at. Nearly all of these, Dr Enow Abrams noted, “echoed the need for a permanent consultation platform.”
The establishment of the Multi-sector Committee of the Electoral Process therefore, would permit stakeholder institutions “to collaborate more effectively in finding collective solutions to the obstacles plaguing our electoral process.
Taking the relay, Nouhoun Sangare, Regional Representative of the UN Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa said it was a noble innovation, and an inclusive project.
“On this day, Cameroon celebrates its deep attachment to democracy, peace and the fundamental principles and values of good governance, which cannot be achieved without strong citizen engagement and through mechanisms dialogue and permanent consultation,” he stated.
The initiative, he told the audience, is an innovative approach set to accrue an immensely positive outcome.
Among other benefits, the Multi-sector Committee of the Electoral Process, he stated unequivocally, “could undoubtedly help to ensure human rights and fundamental freedoms before, during and after elections, strengthening the participation of youth, women, people living with disabilities, indigenous peoples and other minorities with specific needs.”
