As a means of youth empowerment, UNICEF Cameroon, in collaboration with the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency – TİKA and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education – MINJEC, has established the first U-Report community in the South West region of Cameroon.
Launched in the Limbe Municipality on March 11, 2026, this initiative officially inducted 60 local youths into the global movement. These young leaders now join a massive national network of over 465,000 U-Reporters across the national triangle, marking a significant expansion of civic engagement in a region currently navigating complex socio-political and environmental challenges.
U-Report serves as a flagship digital platform designed by UNICEF to give young people a seat at the table of national dialogue. By participating in real-time polls and accessing verified information, members can voice out their opinions on critical issues like healthcare, education, child protection, and peacebuilding.
The platform transforms passive observation into active volunteerism, ensuring that the perspectives of adolescents directly inform humanitarian responses and government development strategies.

The newly formed Limbe cohort will specifically target community resilience and climate action, which are vital concerns for the coastal municipality. These 60 U-Reporters are tasked with leading awareness campaigns focused on waste management, coastal protection, and flooding prevention.
By getting feedback from the community and disseminating life-saving information, these volunteers act as a bridge between the local population and development partners, focusing on environmental sustainability in the face of increasing climate vulnerabilities.
Nadine Perrault, the UNICEF Representative in Cameroon, hailed the launch as a testament to the power of youth as agents of change. She emphasized that the initiative is more than just a digital tool; it is a commitment by young leaders to amplify the voices of the most vulnerable and foster a more inclusive society.
The strategic partnership with TİKA further strengthens the mission by enhancing local youth structures and providing safe, inclusive spaces where collaboration between these young people and the local authorities can be done effectively.
Despite the various hurdles faced in the South West Region, the determination of these young U-Reporters reflects a generational shift toward proactive civic duty. UNICEF and its partners thus reaffirm that youth participation is a fundamental driving force for social cohesion and sustainable development.
By empowering the youth of Limbe to lead, the program offers a renewed sense of hope and a practical roadmap for building community resilience throughout Cameroon.
