The 14th World Trade Organization – WTO Ministerial Conference officially commenced today at the Yaounde Conference Center, marking a historic moment for Cameroon and the African continent.

Presided over by WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the ceremony was held in the presence of Prime Minister Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, representing President Paul Biya. As the Chair of the conference, Cameroon’s Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, set the tone for the high-level talks by issuing six thematic proposals focused on critical global issues, including food security and the liberalization of international trade routes.

The opening ceremony drew an impressive assembly of over 4,000 delegates from 166 participating countries. Distinguished guests included the Vice President of Gambia, Muhammed B.S. Jallow, and Dr. George Elombi, President and Board Chairman of Afreximbank, alongside Cameroonian-born Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The diverse attendance was highlighted by unique cultural moments, such as Samoa’s Head of Delegation, Fata Ryan Schuster, presenting his country’s Documents of Acceptance barefoot to honor his heritage—a gesture that resonated deeply with the international audience.

In his keynote address, Prime Minister Dion Ngute formally declared the proceedings open, calling on delegates to build a “strong and lasting consensus” on the rules governing global commerce. He urged ministers to prioritize dialogue over confrontation to ensure the creation of sustainable and equitable trading systems.

This sentiment was echoed by international delegates like China’s Xiao Ling, who expressed optimism for enhanced Africa-China cooperation, and Ireland’s William Horgan, who noted that their focus would remain on agricultural innovation and fisheries partnerships with Asian and African nations.

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala concluded the opening session by outlining the three strategic pillars that will guide the upcoming panel discussions: Governance, Development, and Level Playing Issues. She exhorted the gathered experts and leaders to work collaboratively to deliver tangible results that reflect the needs of a modern global economy.

To ensure the comfort of all participants during these intense negotiations, the host committee has implemented inclusive measures, such as a dedicated prayer tent at the conference center to accommodate the spiritual requirements of Muslim faithful during the event.
