The “Junior Ambassadors of the IRM” initiative, launched on August 7, 2026, by the Youth Volunteer for Environment Association, best known by the french acronym JVE in Ngong, represents a bold step forward in community-level climate education.
Supported by the Independent Redress Mechanism – IRM of the Green Climate Fund – GCF as part of the “IRM CSO Advocacy Grant” project, this creative endeavor was developed directly on the ground. Designed to replace a school caravan that became unfeasible due to summer break and budget limits, the project quickly stood out as one of the most innovative setups of the 2026 grant cycle.
At the core of the initiative was an interactive educational skit designed to make complex climate accountability concepts accessible to children. The performance featured a fictional scenario where a Green Climate Fund-backed dam accidentally blocked a child’s path to school.
Guided by three facilitators, twelve local children constituted of eight girls and four boys acted out the story to find a solution. This role-play clearly demonstrated how legitimate climate projects can sometimes produce unintended negative impacts on local populations.
To reinforce the lesson, the young participants were introduced to the Road to Redress game and took part in an outdoor simulation of the grievance process. This experiential approach allowed the children to step into the roles of problem-solvers and learn how the IRM functions in real-world settings.
To widen the program’s reach, digital versions of the project’s educational comic book were shared with parents, turning family homes into secondary spaces for learning and discussion.
Reflecting on the mission, project manager Blondel Silenou emphasized the value of adaptability in field operations. He observed that when primary plans encounter obstacles, the focus must shift to identifying alternative ways to reach the same objective rather than cancelling the activity. Silenou noted that the Junior Ambassadors proved how field teams can adjust smoothly while ensuring that young people gain a genuine, practical understanding of international redress mechanisms.
In conclusion, the trial in Ngong demonstrates that child-focused environmental education can thrive outside traditional school environments by using creative, interactive methods that overcome literacy barriers.
By combining theater, outdoor simulations, and digital storybooks, JVE Cameroon successfully engaged both youth and their families in climate governance. Moving forward, the organization plans to turn this experience into a standardized educational toolkit that can be replicated in other communities across the region.
