The Ministry of External Relations of Cameroon recently summoned the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea to Cameroon, H.E. Armando KOTE ECHUACA, for high-level diplomatic talks in Yaounde.

Received in audience by the Acting Secretary General on behalf of the Minister, the ambassador engaged in discussions centered on the ongoing security operations in Equatorial Guinea involving the verification of residence permits, detentions, and the subsequent repatriation of foreign nationals.

While affirming the strong bilateral cooperation and brotherly ties uniting the two neighboring Central African nations, the Cameroonian representative conveyed the government’s grave concern regarding the harsh conditions surrounding the migrant checks.

The Cameroonian delegation highlighted several troubling incidents reported during the crackdown, explicitly raising alarms over documented injuries, a loss of life, and the precarious conditions under which detained Cameroonian citizens are currently being held.

During the meeting, the Cameroonian government clarified its position regarding territorial jurisdiction and regional governance frameworks. Cameroon underscored that it fully respects Equatorial Guinea’s national sovereignty and its constitutional right to enforce immigration laws within its borders.

However, Cameroonian officials firmly called for strict adherence to regional agreements established under the Economic Community of Central African States – ECCAS and the Central African Economic and Monetary Community – CEMAC governing the free movement of goods and people across member states.

Furthermore, Cameroon emphasized that law enforcement operations must be conducted with absolute respect for human rights and human dignity. The diplomatic appeal urges Equatoguinean authorities to ensure that administrative procedures do not compromise the fundamental protections owed to foreign residents, regardless of their legal status.

In response to the representations made by the Ministry, Ambassador KOTE ECHUACA took note of Cameroon’s official concerns and committed to delivering the message directly to the competent authorities in Malabo.

Reaffirming the commitment to regional harmony, both parties concluded the audience with a shared commitment to resolving the situation through continuous dialogue, mutual respect, and bilateral cooperation.
