With the aim of eradicating illegal dumps and restoring the beauty of the ocean tourist site, the Kribi Urban Community (Cuk) launched a massive garbage bin distribution operation recently in the town.

For a couple of months now, piles of garbage have been steadily increasing in one of Cameroon’s major tourist cities. Sidewalks, beaches, and many other areas of Kribi are plagued by unsanitary conditions. Damien, a father and native of Dombè in Kribi 2 district, says, “The smells are unbearable. We sometimes have to stay with friends to avoid getting sick. The garbage collectors can go months without coming.”

To address this persistent problem, the Mayor of Kribi, Guy Emmanuel Sabikanda, decided to take concrete action by deploying nearly 8,000 garbage bins for household waste disposal. The pilot phase of this initiative began on January 8, 2026, with the first beneficiaries being government offices and primary schools in the city. “This is a start. Kribi deserves to regain its natural beauty. Illegal dumping and foul odors are unacceptable for a leading tourist destination that welcomes thousands of visitors each year,” declared the Mayor.

According to Bouba Haman, Senior Divisional Officer of the Ocean Dividion, this distribution is only a first step. For the seaside town to achieve lasting cleanliness, this action must be accompanied by increased mechanical resources and greater public awareness. Regaining cleanliness depends on it.

The initiative aims to eliminate illegal disposal of waste , but the challenge is enormous. Kribi is desperately lacking in equipment. The Hygiene and Sanitation company – Hysacam currently has only two collection trucks, a number which inferior to cope with the population growth and the increasing volume of urban waste.
