The town of Tonga in Cameroon’s West Region witnessed large crowds on Friday, July 24, 2026, as residents gathered ahead of a mega rally organised to express appreciation to President Paul Biya following the election of Right Honourable Theodore Datouo as Speaker of the National Assembly.

He was warmly welcomed by West Region Governor Awa Fonka Augustine, members of government, Members of Parliament – MP, traditional rulers led by the Paramount Ruler of Tonga, Ngapmou Louis, and a jubilant population.

Organisers say the July 25 rally is intended to thank President Biya for supporting the emergence of their “illustrious son” as Speaker of the National Assembly. Since assuming office four months ago, Datouo has consistently highlighted Parliament’s responsibility to represent citizens, amplify their concerns, and exercise oversight over the executive.

However, the planned rally has also drawn attention because Datouo is mobilising supporters to thank President Biya for his election, even though the Speaker was formally elected by fellow Members of Parliament.

The event has sparked discussion over the balance between political patronage and the parliamentary process that led to his emergence as head of the National Assembly.
