The construction of the Nachtigal dam in Batchenga, in the Lékié division of the Centre region, is progressing well. This was announced by the Nachtigal Hydro Power Company (NHPC) in an information note published on its LinkedIn account on September 17, 2024.
According to the published official data, the project, which started on February 1, 2019, has reached a completion rate of 95.9% by the end of August 2024. This includes 96.7% completion of the civil engineering work package, 93.7% completion of the electromechanical work package, 100% completion of the transmission line work package and 100% completion of the operational city work package.
When fully commissioned in 2024, the Nachtigal hydropower scheme, with a total capacity of 420 MW, will contribute approximately 30% of the country’s electricity consumption. With this dam, Cameroon aims to stabilise its electricity supply by building a connection point at Nachtigal between the interconnected North and South grids. The aim is to minimise the country’s energy deficit.
