A pro-Biafra separatist group launched a deadly attack on the peninsula last Sunday.
Several members of the joint Nigerian-Cameroonian border patrol force were attacked last Sunday by the Black Marines. The group is known to be a militant group loyal to the League of the Nations of Biafra, a Nigerian separatist organisation that claims ownership over the Bakassi Peninsula.
At least 17 members of the joint border patrol force were killed in the attack, according to Nigeria Sunrise Daily TV, . Neither the Cameroonian nor Nigerian authorities have officially made an announcement on this attack.
The Nigerian press also reports that the attack occurred near the Nigerian border village of Ugenghe, located in the Mbo local government area of Akwa Ibom State. The troops were apparently protecting oil installations and those working near the maritime border.
