While crossing the road on January, 11 2023, Bernis Tando was fatally shot.

Another tragedy has been added to the dark list in connection with the security crisis in the North West and South West regions. Bernis Tando lost her life last Thursday as a result of a bullet wound. The impact of the bullet took her off the public road. As she crossed the road, she was hit by a stray bullet fired by a gendarme. The shot was fired with the intention of hitting a vehicle. The said vehicle managed to escape after getting stopped.

The incident took place in Okoyong, in Manyu division, in the South West region. This is one of the two regions in crisis since 2016. In both administrative regions, the civilian population sometimes finds itself caught in the middle of clashes between separatists and the defence and security forces. The security checkpoints have a preventative role in protecting people and property. But last Thursday, an innocent woman lost her life when a vehicle was forced to comply.

The local authorities have launched a full investigation. The aim is to establish the circumstances of the accident and who was responsible.
