The Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Prof. Abena Ondoa née Obama Marie Thérèse in a diplomatic engagement focused on human rights and social protection, hosted Her Excellency Veronika Boskovic Pohar, Ambassador of the European Union to Cameroon, on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

The bilateral discussions centered on elevating the status of women, safeguarding family stability, and advancing child rights across the country, core priorities shared by both the Cameroonian government and the European Union delegation.

A primary highlight of the audience was the draft legislation combating violence against women and girls, developed by MINPROFF as part of a comprehensive national strategy to eradicate femicide. Minister Abena Ondoa detailed the government’s ongoing actions to protect vulnerable populations and disclosed that the proposed bill is currently under review at the Presidency of the Republic, with plans to submit it to Parliament during the upcoming November session.

Ambassador Boskovic Pohar reaffirmed the European Union’s strong interest in supporting this legislative landmark as a critical step toward gender equality.

Beyond standard diplomatic protocol, the meeting established concrete avenues for deepened cooperation between the EU and MINPROFF. Both parties actively discussed operational preparations for the upcoming 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign.

The European delegation expressed a clear intention to identify and commit resources to strategic areas of intervention throughout the annual awareness initiative, reinforcing grassroots efforts to eliminate gender-based harm.

This high-level exchange underlines a shared commitment to building institutional synergies that drive real progress for women and children in Cameroon.

By aligning legislative frameworks, international resources, and advocacy initiatives, MINPROFF and the European Union are creating a unified front to advance gender equality, empower women and girls, and guarantee fundamental rights across families and communities nationwide.
