Pope Leo XIV is set to be admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital late on Tuesday morning to undergo surgery for the removal of a small, localized lung nodule.

According to Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, the condition was identified during routine medical examinations. Following the surgical procedure, the Pontiff is expected to remain hospitalized for approximately one week to ensure a smooth recovery.

The upcoming medical procedure has required adjustments to the Pope’s public schedule and official commitments. Among these changes, Pope Leo XIV will not participate in the scheduled afternoon session of the event held in the Paul VI Hall, which marks the tenth anniversary of the landmark apostolic exhortation Amoris laetitia.

In light of his hospitalization, the Holy Father has delegated key liturgical responsibilities to senior Vatican leadership. He has requested Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization and the new Dean of the College of Cardinals, to preside over the Mass on Wednesday, October 14, in St. Peter’s Square.

The Wednesday liturgy will assemble a diverse gathering of church leaders and lay faithful, including heads of Eastern Churches, Presidents of Bishops’ Conferences, experts, and married couples.

The Vatican community and global faithful continue to keep the Pontiff in their thoughts and prayers as he prepares for his operation and subsequent recovery period.
