Veterans of international television broadcasting mark the end of an era as CNN’s chief international anchor, Christiane Amanpour, announced she will be leaving the network next year after 43 years of dedicated service.

In an official statement, the 68-year-old journalist shared that after months of reflection, she decided to separate from her longtime broadcasting home.

Expressing enthusiasm for future projects, Amanpour encouraged her colleagues to maintain independent journalism, offering the reminder to “always be truthful, not neutral.”
Amanpour’s journey at CNN began in 1983, starting as an assistant on the international news desk before rising to become one of the network’s most recognizable global correspondents.

Over the decades, she earned international recognition for her fearless reporting from world conflict zones. Since 2009, she has anchored her flagship nightly interview program on CNN International, building a reputation for rigorous and incisive interviewing.

Reflecting on her career, Amanpour highlighted key milestones ranging from her first major field assignment covering the First Gulf War to reporting on major conflicts in Bosnia, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Iran. She dedicated her announcement to her production teams and field crews, emphasizing that camaraderie and teamwork were central to gathering facts and delivering transparent reporting to a global audience without fear or favor.

Network leadership praised her decades of service and impact on broadcast journalism. CNN Chairman Mark Thompson described Amanpour as “one of the most trusted and beloved journalists anywhere” and confirmed that the network plans to celebrate her career prior to her departure next year. Thompson acknowledged that while the network is sad to see her leave, leadership respects her decision as the right step for her personally and professionally.

Amanpour leaves behind a legacy that shaped modern foreign correspondence and elevated global reporting standards at CNN. As the network prepares to honor her four-decade tenure in the coming months, her departure signals a significant transition for the organization’s international news division.
