Gabon’s media regulator, the High Authority for Communication – HAC, officially lifted its eight-month suspension of social media platforms on Saturday, October 24, 2026.
The restriction had been enforced since February 17, following government concerns over the rapid spread of defamatory, hateful, and obscene content.
Meeting in an extraordinary plenary session in Libreville under the chairmanship of Germain Ngoyo Moussavou, the regulator confirmed that access to major digital platforms is now fully restored across the country.
The prolonged eight-month blackout had drawn extensive domestic and international criticism due to its wide-ranging economic and social fallout. Small and medium-sized enterprises – SMEs alongside local news outlets reported substantial financial losses stemming from the disruption of their primary digital marketing and publishing channels. Meanwhile, tech-savvy citizens routinely relied on Virtual Private Networks – VPNs to bypass the national block to maintain online communication.
To justify ending the ban, the HAC pointed to significant progress made in strengthening the national legal framework and establishing direct compliance mechanisms with international tech companies.
The regulator initiated formal discussions with major digital platforms, including Meta, TikTok, and YouTube. These negotiations produced operational collaboration protocols designed to give Gabonese authorities direct access to content reporting tools for real-time digital moderation.
Moving forward, the regulatory body has urged Gabonese internet users to practice greater digital responsibility and adhere to community guidelines. The HAC indicated that cooperation with global tech firms will deepen in the coming months, with official delegations from both Meta and TikTok scheduled to visit Libreville to finalize ongoing oversight and safety arrangements.
By transitioning from a total platform ban to structured regulatory partnerships, Gabon aims to balance national security and social cohesion with digital commerce and open communication. The resolution allows local businesses and media organizations to resume normal online operations while setting a precedent for standardizing content moderation across Central Africa.
