On April 17, 2026, the city of Douala became the spiritual heart of Cameroon as His Holiness Pope Leo XIV arrived for the third day of his apostolic visit.

Greeted at the airport by Paul Atanga Nji, the personal representative of President Paul Biya, the Holy Father was met with an overwhelming display of national fervor. Thousands of the faithful lined the streets as the Pope traveled in his Popemobile toward the Japoma Stadium, setting a tone of profound communion and spiritual significance for a visit centered on the themes of unity and compassion.

​At the Japoma Stadium, the Pope celebrated a historic Pontifical Mass before a massive assembly, supported by a majestic choir of eight hundred voices. Drawing on the biblical parable of the multiplication of the loaves, his homily challenged the conscience of the nation, urging everyone from public officials to ordinary families to reject indifference.

He emphasized that the “hunger” of the world is both material and spiritual, calling on the faithful to transform even the most modest resources into instruments of sharing. He specifically addressed the youth, exhorting them to shun violence and the lure of easy gain in favor of an active faith dedicated to the common good.

​Following the liturgical celebration, the Holy Father’s mission of mercy continued at the Saint-Paul Catholic Hospital. Accompanied by Minister Atanga Nji, Governor Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua, and Archbishop Samuel Kleda, the Pope spent time at the bedsides of the suffering. He offered personal prayers and moral comfort to the seriously ill and shared a touching message of hope with the children, expressing his desire to see them “run and smile again.” His presence served as a powerful benediction for the medical staff, whom he encouraged to persevere in their demanding vocation of care.
