The long-awaited construction of the Ebolowa-Akom II-Kribi road has reached a decisive turning point with the official signing of the loan agreement on May 15, 2026.
This strategic step, finalized in the presence of the Minister of Public Works and representatives from Standard Chartered Bank, confirms the total availability of funding. By securing these financial levers, the government has transitioned the project from the planning stages to the active operational phase, fulfilling a major infrastructure commitment made by the President of the Republic.
Spanning a total of 179.279 kilometers, the project is a massive undertaking designed to transform regional mobility. The infrastructure includes a 161.6 km main axis connecting Ebolowa to Kribi via Akom II, alongside essential bypasses for both urban centers. With a total investment evaluated at nearly 169 billion FCFA, the project aims not only to pave a primary corridor but also to implement secondary developments that will facilitate the movement of goods and people across this vital economic zone.
The financial structure of the project relies on a robust partnership, featuring a guaranteed loan of 131.4 billion FCFA mobilized through Standard Chartered Bank and UK Export Finance – UKEF.
This funding package ensures that the technical teams have the necessary resources to maintain momentum without interruption. On the ground, the transition is already visible; the construction firm ICM Construction Limited has been active in Akom II for over a month, establishing technical bases and performing emergency maintenance to keep existing traffic flowing while heavy equipment is deployed.
Under the technical supervision of the DAR GROUP, the construction phase is now set to accelerate. The collaboration between international financial institutions and the Ministry of Public Works represents a significant milestone for Cameroon’s structural development.
As the “Maître d’ouvrage,” the MINTP now possesses all the administrative and financial tools required to oversee the successful delivery of this road, which is expected to serve as a backbone for trade and connectivity between the South and the coastal regions.
