The second edition of the “Olembe Golden Week” confirms the ambitious vision crafted by the current Director General of the National Office for Sports Infrastructure and Equipment – ONIES.

The event had garnered the strong support and enthusiasm of the population of Yaounde and beyond, as well as various public administrations. During the opening ceremony, high-profile figures were in attendance, including Joseph Antoine Bell, President of the Guidance Council, alongside François Félix Eboa Mbappé, the Director General and mastermind behind the project.

The primary goal of the Director General and his team is to energize and render profitable the sports complex, an infrastructure that has sometimes been unfairly mocked by a segment of public opinion. Among its major supporters, the Mayor of the Yaounde 5 district municipality, Augustin Mballa, stands out as a testament to local authority backing.

Ultimately, this unifying concept emerges at a crucial time when national cohesion is under threat in several regions across Cameroon. Olembe Golden Week positions itself as a platform bringing together all sons and daughters of Cameroon around sports.

The open house event has been taking place at the Olembe Sports Complex since August 7th. For this year’s edition, ONIES pulled out all the stops to deliver an exceptional experience. The opening ceremony on the 7th showcased an impressive array of distinguished guests who gathered to witness the skill and know-how of the participants.

The public turned out in vast numbers to take part in the festivities. Enthusiastic crowds and families arrived to enjoy a wide range of recreational activities alongside dynamic exhibition sessions. A notable highlight was the display by Racing 237, as they prepared for the Motorcycle Grand Prix scheduled for August 9th at the complex.

By the second day of the event, more than 10,000 people, including active participants and visiting families, had already demonstrated their keen interest in this flagship concept popularized by ONIES. Through sport and community engagement, the initiative successfully breathes new life into a iconic national asset.
