The 8th edition of International Archives Week in Cameroon has officially drawn to a close following a prestigious closing ceremony held in the national banquet hall. Solemnly presided over by the Minister of Arts and Culture, the event brought together a distinguished gathering of high-ranking dignitaries, including prominent representatives from the Sovereign Order of Malta, such as Grand Commander Fra’Emmanuel ROUSSEAU and Ambassador Jean Christophe HEIDSIECK.

Organized under the oversight of the Ministry of Arts and Culture and spearheaded by the National Archives of Cameroon, the week-long commemoration served as a vital platform for deep reflection on the shifting landscape of historical preservation.

Centered around the theme, “Sovereign Archives for Historical Truth, Social Justice, and Digital Governance in Cameroon,” the celebration was anchored by two primary activities: an interactive professional roundtable and an academic study day.

Throughout these sessions, a diverse group of archivism experts, students, and international partners engaged in rigorous debates regarding a pivotal challenge facing modern societies—mastering information, evidence, and collective memory in an increasingly digitized world. The collective insights gathered from these discussions highlighted three major structural advancements for the nation, including the rise of new professional associations, the systemic standardization of good archiving practices, and the comprehensive modern evolution of the archival profession itself.

International guest of honor Mr. Fra’Emmanuel ROUSSEAU addressed the assembly by drawing a powerful connection between preservation, justice, and peace, echoing recent sentiments shared by Pope Leo XIV during his apostolic visit to Cameroon. ROUSSEAU commended the Cameroonian government’s proactive efforts in entirely renovating the National Archives building, noting that such infrastructure spending underscores the capital importance the state places on its historical legacy.

He further extended his warm congratulations to the Director of the National Archives of Cameroon for his dynamic leadership and successful deployment of resources throughout the planning and execution of the week’s events.

In his closing discourse, the Minister of Arts and Culture lauded the growing synergy between public and private actors, noting that archival management has successfully transitioned from passive heritage preservation into a dynamic asset. He emphasized that the widespread enthusiasm shown for electronic archiving, data protection, and informational sovereignty proves that records are now viewed as a strategic resource crucial for modernizing public administration.

As the curtain falls on the 2026 edition, Cameroon stands poised to leverage its strengthened archival frameworks as a cornerstone for sustainable national development and transparent governance.
