The Messamena Development Committee – CODEM, in partnership with Cameroon’s Ministry of Secondary Education – MINESEC, has launched a landmark “Digital Education and School Governance” caravan across the Messamena district in the East Region.

Running from October 10 to 18, 2026, this citizen-led initiative visits all eight secondary schools in the sub-division to introduce students, educators, and parents to practical technology tools and modern administrative standards.

Despite early rain on launch day, the caravan kicked off at Messamena Bilingual High School, marking a significant milestone in bringing digital literacy to rural educational institutions.
Speaking at the launch, Prosper Abe’ele, President of the CODEM National Executive Bureau, stressed that digital literacy is no longer a luxury but an absolute necessity for modern social integration.

Addressing the stark digital divide in the East Region, CODEM backed its vision with action by donating ten complete desktop computers to local schools. Messamena Bilingual High School and the Technical High School each received three computers, while the secondary schools – CES of Koua, Dimpam, Doumo-Mama, and Ngoulmakong received the remaining units. For many students, this event marked their very first hands-on experience with computer hardware and practical IT training.

The nine-day outreach program delivers six comprehensive training modules across two consecutive weekends. These sessions cover compliance with official tuition payment schedules, online fee processing, classroom teaching digitization, institutional governance, parent-teacher association – PTA management, and public-private community partnerships.

Representing the Minister of Secondary Education, Bernadette Mbiah Sansi reiterated the government’s commitment under Professor Nalova Lyonga Egbe to modernize Cameroonian schools. Over 500 students participated in initial interactive workshops, gaining valuable exposure to digital tools while learning about cyber-ethics and responsible social media usage.

A major focus of the campaign is introducing the “zero cash in schools” concept, aimed at curbing financial opacity and modernizing administrative workflows. Through dedicated roundtable discussions, school principals, teachers, school board members, and APEE executives are aligning their practices with ministerial directives on digital financial transactions.

By shifting school fee collection and administrative processing to secure online channels, the initiative seeks to promote greater transparency, mitigate mismanagement risks, and streamline record-keeping across all participating secondary institutions.

While welcoming CODEM’s transformative effort, the Mayor of Messamena, Alfred Nkouok, highlighted critical infrastructure challenges that must be addressed for long-term sustainability. He noted that the full impact of digital education can only be realized if rural communities gain access to stable electricity and reliable internet connectivity.

Despite these existing infrastructural hurdles, local civic leaders and educational administrators remain optimistic that introducing tech-driven learning will equip students with the competitive skills needed for higher education and future professional success.

The arrival of the digital caravan represents a powerful promise of educational equity for youth in the Messamena district. By combining physical equipment donations, hands-on student workshops, and transparent governance training for school leaders, CODEM and MINESEC are laying the foundation for a modern, accountable learning environment.

As the caravan continues its tour across local secondary schools, it reinforces the message that quality education and technological fluency should be accessible to all Cameroonian students, regardless of their geographic location.
