The Minister of Commerce, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, met in Yaounde with the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy, H.E. John G. Robinson, and Economic Section Chief Yelena Zeru.
The audience served as a preparatory meeting to gather Cameroon’s priorities ahead of the Washington-backed Cameroon-United States Economic Dialogue scheduled for August 27, 2026. During the discussions, the U.S. envoy outlined the strategic framework of the upcoming dialogue, which centers on three core pillars: business climate, trade opportunities, and investment potential across high-growth sectors such as mining, technology, and fintech.
Central to Cameroon’s agenda is its reinstatement into the African Growth and Opportunity Act – AGOA following its suspension in January 2020. Minister Mbarga Atangana stressed that returning to the tariff-free mechanism is a major economic imperative, noting that the country had previously aligned its trade operations with the agreement before being sidelined due to non-trade-related criteria. Beyond gaining market access, the Minister emphasized that Cameroon seeks technical assistance focused on financing local production and processing to ensure exported goods carry higher added value.
To boost export competitiveness on global markets, the Ministry of Commerce highlighted key infrastructure projects slated for discussion during the dialogue. Chief among these is the construction of a national standards and quality laboratory designed to enhance local certification and ensure products meet international standards.
Additionally, the Ministry presented its completed feasibility study for a new Commodity Exchange, a platform designed to connect producers directly to market demand, increase price transparency, and maximize the economic valuation of local agricultural outputs.
The high-level talks concluded on a collaborative note, with both delegations recognizing artificial intelligence as a critical frontier for future technological and commercial partnership. The U.S. representative also extended formal congratulations to the Minister for Cameroon’s successful hosting of the 14th World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference – MC14.
As both nations prepare for the August 27 event, the bilateral dialogue promises to unlock new avenues for private sector participation and reshape economic cooperation between Washington and Yaounde.
