Ahead of the new academic year, the Yaoundé 2 district demonstrated community solidarity by hosting its third annual school kit distribution ceremony on September 2nd in Ntougou 1.
Spearheaded by municipal councillor Effa Adelaïde and presided over by Mayor Yannick Ayissi, the initiative delivered essential school supplies to 169 children from impoverished families. Mayor Ayissi commended the project for directly addressing the severe socio-economic challenges faced by local residents, noting that receiving basic supplies provides crucial relief to struggling parents and eager students alike.
The distribution was grounded in a rigorous, three-day field investigation across the Ntougou sector. A team of census takers visited over 300 households to evaluate living conditions and collect detailed background information through formal survey forms. By personally assessing the severe overcrowding and financial difficulties present in the area, local officials systematically identified the 169 most disadvantaged recipients enrolled in public or low-cost private schools.
This census process highlighted severe socio-economic disparities within the district. Councillor Effa Adelaïde expressed deep concern over the precarious living conditions in the Ntougou 1 slums, drawing attention to the stark contrast between these impoverished settlements and the prominent nearby institutions, such as the United States Embassy. The primary objective of the relief effort was to ease the financial burden on parents while bringing encouragement to children living in cramped and substandard housing conditions.
