UNICEF Cameroon and the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie – AUF signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding on March 30, 2026.

This strategic partnership is designed to institutionalize child rights within the higher education landscape through advanced training, specialized research, and pedagogical innovation.

By bridging the gap between university excellence and grassroots social action, the agreement aims to empower a new generation of professionals and researchers dedicated to transforming the lives of children across the Central African region.

The collaboration builds upon a foundation laid in 2023 with the establishment of Child Rights Centers – CRCs. These centers serve as vital hubs for educational innovation and community engagement, producing the necessary data to inform and shape public policies.

Under the new agreement, these CRCs will be further utilized as practical laboratories for professional development, allowing students and faculty to translate theoretical knowledge into impactful research that addresses the unique challenges faced by vulnerable children in the Francophone academic network.

A cornerstone of this partnership is the creation of a pioneering Master’s program in “Social and Behaviour Change for Child Rights.” Designed as a hybrid model to maximize accessibility, the curriculum will combine traditional in-person instruction with robust online learning platforms.

AUF will leverage its extensive global university network to lead the pedagogical design and strengthen teaching capacities, while UNICEF is set to provide the technical expertise, internship opportunities, and mentorship programs required to ensure the degree remains grounded in real-world application.

During the signing ceremony, Nadine Perrault, UNICEF Representative in Cameroon, emphasized that this synergy marks a significant shift toward turning child rights into “concrete action.” By mobilizing youth and researchers, the initiative seeks to create a sustainable knowledge ecosystem that influences governmental decision-making.

The Acting Regional Director of AUF added that the program represents a vital bridge between academic rigor and social welfare, ensuring that future leaders in Central Africa are equipped with the specialized skills necessary to champion the well-being of the next generation.

The joint effort by UNICEF and AUF reaffirms a long-term commitment to fostering a regional academic network that prioritizes the protection of minors. Through joint research initiatives, academic exchanges, and the co-organization of high-level symposia, both institutions aim to elevate the discourse on child rights within the Central African and Great Lakes regions.

This institutionalized approach ensures that the pursuit of children’s rights is no longer treated as a peripheral issue but as a core component of regional academic and developmental goals.
