The Director General of Cameroon’s national water utility, CAMWATER, conducted a high-priority inspection visit to the Japoma drinking water supply system rehabilitation and expansion project site in the Wouri department.

The field mission was designed to evaluate the physical progress of the ongoing construction and pinpoint immediate technical interventions needed to fast-track the project’s commissioning. During the site tour, the leadership team engaged directly with technical staff to resolve on-site challenges and ensure strict adherence to development deadlines.

To streamline the final phases of construction, several critical operational guidelines were established during the visit. These measures include securing the underground networks through clear physical marking, installing sustainable solar-powered lighting across the facility, and upgrading sanitation systems to mitigate localized flooding risks. Most notably, the Director General authorized a phased commissioning strategy, which will allow completed sections of the infrastructure to begin supplying water to residents ahead of full project completion.

Looking toward the region’s future consumption needs, CAMWATER has also initiated planning for subsequent distribution networks. The utility ordered preparatory studies for the redevelopment of the older SP3 station and mapped out a dedicated pipeline to supply the upcoming Dibamba industrial zone directly from the new Japoma facility.

To support these expansions, particularly during the highly sensitive membrane installation phase, management emphasized the necessity of seamless coordination between government ministries and project partners.

This strategic project underscores CAMWATER’s ongoing commitment to monitoring and upgrading Cameroon’s urban water infrastructure. By accelerating the rehabilitation and expansion of the Japoma station, the utility aims to significantly reduce potable water scarcity in Douala and its surrounding industrial hubs.

The timely execution of the project is expected to deliver a reliable, long-term clean water supply, directly improving living standards and supporting economic growth in the region.
