The foreign ministers of the member countries of the military alliance were received on Wednesday by Chad’s president Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno.Since the withdrawal of Mali on May 15, 2022, because of its refusal to assume the presidency, the G5 Sahel “is floundering,” said a statement from the Presidency of the Republic of Chad.

Gathered around the Head of State General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, the foreign affairs ministers of Mauritania, Chad, Burkina and Niger intend to “provide political support” in order to “give new life” to the community institution.

Accompanied by Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, the Executive Secretary of the G5 Sahel and Ambassador Mahamat Saleh Annadif, coordinating minister, they “came to report on the progress of their work and collect the guidelines of the current president of the G5 Sahel,” the document says.

The text recalls that “on the sidelines of the Extraordinary Summit of the African Union (AU), November 25, 2022 in Niger, the Chadian Head of State and current chairman of the G5 Sahel, General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, had chaired a consultation meeting of the heads of state of the member countries” with the aim of giving a new impetus to effectively fight against jihadist groups in the Sahel.
