In a decisive move to bolster academic success and alleviate the financial burden on vulnerable families, Plan International Cameroon launched a large-scale textbook distribution campaign on April 14, 2026.

Having as target Class 5 and Class 6 students in public primary schools across the East region, the initiative focuses on core subjects such as Mathematics, French, and English. By providing these essential resources, the organization aims to level the playing field for children in remote communities, ensuring they have the tools necessary to excel in their end-of-year official examinations.

This campaign, implemented in close partnership with the Regional Delegation of Basic Education, addresses a critical national challenge: the rising number of students entering secondary school without sufficient reading proficiency.

Mr. Mezing Théophile, a Regional Educational Advisor, hailed the initiative as a “major support” for the entire educational system. The effort is not just about books; it is a call for collective engagement among teachers, local authorities, and parents to ensure that these resources are distributed equitably and managed sustainably for the benefit of the children.

The initiative is deeply rooted in Plan International’s long history of inclusive education in Cameroon. Decades ago, the organization pioneered the translation of educational manuals into Baka, the local language of Indigenous communities, breaking down linguistic barriers that had long excluded forest-dwelling populations from formal schooling.

Today, the fruits of that vision are visible as former beneficiaries now serve as community leaders and advocates for their peers, proving that when education speaks a child’s language, it has the power to reshape destinies across generations.

Local leaders have expressed high hopes for the impact of this support on regional development. Mr. Honoré Koume, Mayor of Doumaintang, noted that these textbooks represent an opportunity for local children to achieve the same academic standards as their peers in the capital city of Yaounde.

This sentiment reinforces Plan International’s core belief that geography should not determine a child’s destiny. By aligning global educational goals with the specific needs of local communities, the organization continues to champion a fairer and more equitable future for every Cameroonian child.

Looking ahead, Plan International Cameroon is calling for renewed international solidarity to sustain these gains. The organization urges partners, including the Global Partnership for Education – GPE, to invest in locally grounded, equity-driven solutions that prioritize learning recovery and language inclusion.

As global education systems face increasing pressure, such bold partnerships remain essential to ensuring that no child—regardless of their background or circumstance—is left behind in the pursuit of knowledge.
