The Minister of Water and Energy, Gaston Eloundou Essomba, held a high-level meeting this April 29, 2026, with international lenders of the Nachtigal hydroelectric project to discuss the future of Cameroon’s energy landscape.

Attended by key stakeholders including NHPC, ARSEL, SONATREL, and ENEO, the session focused on the performance and sustainability of the national grid as production capacity rises. Central to the dialogue were the structural implications of the nationalization of ENEO and the evolution of the contractual relationship between the utility provider and the Nachtigal Hydro Power Company – NHPC.

A major priority of the audience was the assessment of the “100-day action plan,” a strategic initiative designed to stabilize the sector’s financial and operational health. The Minister and financial partners reviewed progress on reinforcing transmission and distribution infrastructure, which is vital for the seamless evacuation of power from the Nachtigal plant.

By upgrading these networks, the government aims to bridge the gap between increased production and consumption, ensuring that the surge in energy effectively reaches the national grid without technical bottlenecks.

The meeting concluded with a strong emphasis on meeting industrial demand, particularly within the Littoral Region’s industrial hubs, to maximize the utility of the new production assets. Beyond the technical benchmarks, the engagement reaffirmed a mutual commitment to long-term cooperation and investor confidence.

The ultimate goal remains a tangible improvement in electricity quality for both domestic households and industrial consumers, leveraging the Nachtigal project as a cornerstone for Cameroon’s economic emergence.
