The population of Cameroon, both at home and abroad, vibrantly commemorated the nation’s 52nd National Unity Day on May 20th under the theme, “National Unity: Backbone of our Defense System, Bedrock of Cameroon’s Development.”
In the capital city of Yaoundé, a diverse crowd of young and old citizens gathered at the May 20 Boulevard for the traditional civilian and military march-past. The highly anticipated parade took place in the distinguished presence of President Paul Biya and First Lady Chantal Biya, setting a patriotic tone for the rest of the day’s festivities.
Following the main parade, various groups retired to private celebrations, including the youths of the Bui 4 Jakiri CPDM subsection. Gathering at “Le Rocher” restaurant in the Obili neighborhood, the militants met under the leadership of Sunjo Wilfred Bongbime, President of the ruling party’s youth wing, YCPDM.
The convivial gathering served a dual purpose: it was both a joyous celebration of national cohesion and a strategic brainstorming session aimed at mobilizing the youth for the country’s upcoming municipal and legislative elections.
A key focus of the meeting was the ongoing national census, an issue deemed highly pertinent by the subsection’s leadership. Barrister Fonka Tomnyuy Mofola edified the young militants on the importance of the exercise, detailing how they should welcomingly accommodate the census agents and strictly respect official data-collection procedures.
This civic enlightenment was strongly echoed and supported by the YCPDM Treasurer, Shey Balon Ghislain, alongside senior party member Pa Viban Joe, who both emphasized compliance with the national exercise.
Beyond civic duties, the youth leaders strongly urged the militants to act as active ambassadors of peace and social cohesion within their respective communities. Reminding the gathering that politics is ultimately a game of numbers, the executive body challenged the members to boost the party’s ranks by actively recruiting new militants. In response, the attendees expressed their gratitude for the guidance, enthusiastically renewing their devotion to the party and promising to spearhead development projects in their homeland of Jakiri.
The celebration concluded in a spirit of harmony as members shared a communal meal symbolizing the very unity they were celebrating. The gathering was further punctuated by musical performances from two subsection members, whose songs carried a powerful, resonant message. The melodies collectively called for a swift return to normalcy and lasting peace in the country’s restive North West and South West regions, capping off the national holiday on a hopeful note.
