The Social Dialogue Consultation and Monitoring Committee – CCSDS recently convened in Yaounde for its consecutive 48th and 49th sessions, bringing together government officials, trade unions, and employers. Chaired by the Minister of Labor and Social Security, the dual sessions served as a strategic platform to evaluate the progress of past resolutions and cultivate a peaceful social climate.

The minister stressed that collaborative social dialogue remains an indispensable mechanism for preventing workplace conflicts and driving Cameroon’s broader economic and social development goals.

A central focus of the deliberations involved a critical retrospective on international labor benchmarks and domestic policies. The committee meticulously reviewed the implementation status of commitments made during their 47th session while identifying lingering roadblocks to progress. Additionally, participants analyzed the outcomes of the recent 114th International Labour Conference, assessing how updated global standards could be effectively integrated to modernize and strengthen Cameroon’s existing social policies.

The sessions also tackled sensitive legal and structural issues, highlighted by a presentation from the Cameroonian Confederation of Labour – CCT titled “Principles and Fundamental Rights: Revisiting the right to strike.” This segment sparked rigorous debate among the tripartite stakeholders concerning trade union freedoms, the boundaries of labor activism, and legal frameworks for regulating industrial actions. Representatives from all three sides examined how to balance workers’ fundamental rights with the necessity of maintaining productivity and structured industrial relations.

The meetings concluded with a unified recommitment from all committee members to transform the CCSDS into a permanent, highly responsive framework for mitigating social tensions. Stakeholders emphasized that prioritizing transparent consultation over unilateral action is key to forging consensual solutions.

Ultimately, the sessions reinforced the collective resolve to improve national working conditions, secure long-term social peace, and support sustainable economic development across Cameroon.
