Cameroon’s Minister of Public Health has inaugurated the first Steering Committee session for the project for Strengthening the Emergency Medicine System – RESYMUC in Yaounde.

This strategic initiative that took place on April 13, 2026 is designed to overhaul and modernize the nation’s emergency medical response. By addressing the rising toll of non-communicable diseases and road accidents, the government aims to build a robust framework capable of preventing avoidable deaths and ensuring health security for all citizens.

The project is backed by a significant partnership between the Cameroonian government and the Republic of Korea, formalized through a grant agreement supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency – KOICA.

RESYMUC focuses on three critical pillars: establishing a formal legal and institutional framework, enhancing the technical skills of medical personnel, and upgrading healthcare infrastructure. These efforts are designed to bridge the gap in service delivery and ensure that life-saving care is available regardless of geographic location.

Since its inception in July 2024, RESYMUC has already moved from planning to preliminary action. Key milestones include the drafting of a specialized bill on emergency medicine and intensive training programs for first responders.

The project gained further institutional weight early this year following a Prime Ministerial decree that formalized its governance structure. This legal backing ensures better intersectoral coordination and strict accountability as the project transitions into its full implementation phase.

Strategic insights for the project were further refined during a high-level mission to South Korea in March 2026. This visit resulted in a commitment to developing an integrated emergency chain and leveraging data-driven management to optimize hospital response times.

By adopting international best practices, Cameroon intends to create a seamless flow from the moment an emergency is reported to the final stage of hospital treatment, ensuring no link in the rescue chain is broken.

Under the authority of the Prime Minister, the steering committee will now oversee the strategic execution of these goals to ensure measurable improvements in public health. This session marks a turning point in Cameroon’s journey toward a modernized healthcare system.

By prioritizing emergency medicine, the state is reaffirming its commitment to the fundamental right to life, promising a future where every medical crisis is met with a swift, professional, and efficient response.
