Seven years after a devastating disaster halted refining activities in Limbe, Cameroon has officially launched a major initiative to rebuild its energy sector.
On Monday, June 29, 2026, the Minister of Finance, Louis Paul Motaze, opened a two-day International Market Sounding consultation in Yaounde.
This crucial event marks a turning point for the National Refining Company SONARA, aiming to breathe new life into a vital asset that has long been a cornerstone of the nation’s economic landscape.
The two-day forum brings together a diverse group of global experts, financial institutions, investors, and industrial partners. Running through June 30, the consultations are designed to outline the scope of the rehabilitation project, gauge investor appetite, and gather strategic feedback from potential stakeholders.
The ultimate goal is to design a restructured SONARA that is not only highly efficient but also fully compliant with top international engineering and environmental standards.
This international mobilization goes far beyond repairing damaged infrastructure; it represents a major leap toward securing Cameroon’s long-term energy sovereignty. By restoring and modernizing its domestic refining capabilities, the government is laying the groundwork for decades of industrial growth and economic opportunity.
The successful overhaul of SONARA is expected to catalyze broader economic development and ensure a more stable, self-reliant energy future for the country.
