The 54th edition of Cameroon’s National Day served as a key platform for administrative and security experts to address the complex relationship between technology and national harmony.
Gathered at the Village of Unity and National Integration on May 15, 2026, officials participated in a crucial panel discussion themed “National unity and Integration put to the test by Digital Technology.” Coordinated by Micheline ATANGA, Technical Advisor No. 1, the event brought together diverse institutional voices to analyze how the rapid rise of cyberspace impacts the country’s shared social fabric and long-standing values of living together.
During the discussions, military and security officials emphasized the double-edged nature of modern communication platforms. Colonel ATONFACK, Head of the Communication Division at the Ministry of Defense, pointed out that while social networks are vital for rapid information sharing and connectivity, they also act as breeding grounds for deepfakes, fake news, and hate speech.
This perspective was mirrored by Commissioner NDOUN, representing the General Delegation for National Security, who warned that these digital platforms can easily exacerbate societal divisions and fuel cybercrimes if left unchecked.
On the other hand, representatives from the telecommunications sector highlighted the immense developmental and connective potential of the digital age.
Dr. ZAMBE, representing the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, revealed that with nearly 40% of the Cameroonian population now connected to the internet, cyberspace acts as a powerful accelerator for integration. He noted that digital platforms effectively bridge geographical gaps and streamline public access to digitized state services, serving as a modern vehicle for bringing diverse populations closer together.
Ultimately, the panel concluded that navigating this digital evolution successfully requires a balanced approach combining civic responsibility and institutional oversight. The experts collectively agreed that in order to transform digital spaces into true instruments of national unity rather than division, Cameroon must invest heavily in public education and awareness campaigns.
Furthermore, they emphasized that establishing robust legal frameworks and promoting responsible digital citizenship are essential steps to combat cyber threats and preserve the nation’s social cohesion.
