Since Friday 24th November, two bills have been presented before parliamentarians. The aim is to enable the President of the Republic to ratify two defense agreements.

Ratification of defense agreements with the United Kingdom, but also with Russia. The agreement, concluded for a renewable period of 5 years, focused mainly on the exchange of views on international security issues, joint training of armed forces, military technology, health and topography, exchange of experience in peacekeeping operations, terrorism and maritime piracy.

The Cameroonian government justified this agreement by the need to ‘diversify our country’s defendse partnership, which has been underway for more than two decades under the leadership of the Chief of the Armed Forces, President Paul Biya.

It is therefore because of this diversification of the defense partnership that Parliament is being asked to vote on the ratification of the Defense and Security Agreement with the United Kingdom. This agreement was also signed in January 2023 for a renewable period of 5 years. It aims at strengthening this cooperation by training the armed forces, providing logistical support, exchanging experience and expertise, military health and sport, and exchanging information on security threats.
